The Fall of the House of Usher’ by Edgar Allan Poe (1839)

There was a boy named  Roderick Usher who was be one of the last generation of Usher’s family. He sent letter to asked his boyhood friend coming  to accompany him. Usher said that he was not in good condition of physically and mentally. Thats why he asked his friend to come to his house. When his boyhood friend came to the house, he catched the dull, dark, horror, pale and it seemed evil athmosphere covered that place. The inside of the house is as horror as the outside. Then he found that Usher also was pale, cadaverousness of complexion, thin and phathetic. Usher said to his boyhood friend that he suffered and fear of something. There was also, a girl named madeline, a sister of Usher. She had a mysterious illness that could not identified by the doctor. During many days, Usher’s boyhood friend was trying to make him cheer up and boosted his spirit but it didnt work well. Usher’s mental still got down without better improvement. No  long time later, Madeline died and they buried her in the tomb below the house because Usher afraid that the doctor might use her body to examine his sister’s  strange disease. Usher’s boyhood friend finally noticed that Usher and Madeline were twins.

In the next following days, Usher’s condition did not get better improvement. One night, he got panic and said to his friend that he looked something uncommon surrounding his house. His booyhood friend convinced him that it was just gas, something that happened naturally. Usher’s boyhood friend was trying to calm Usher’s feeling by read him a story “Mad Trist” of Sir Launcelot Canning. As the story went to read, they heard noises that seemed support the image of the story. He ignored the sound but soon, the noises become more clear and real. Usher told that he had been hearing the sounds for many days. Finally, they saw Madeline was standing in the white bloody robes and soon, she attacked her brother. The boyhood friend was afraid and he escaped from the house. In the end, when he could reach the outside of the house, he saw the house was falling down.

Actually I like this story because it is simple but has good ending although most of it just describe about the atmosphere of the place and character. The atmosphere that I catch when I read this story is gloomy, horror, creep and dark. The way Edgar Allan Poe describes the condition of house and the character lead the reader feel the gothic athmosphere. I can imagine the condition of the Usher’s as a medieveal house with gothic or baroque architecture. Another impression I get is I feel like saw cartoon movies  when I was little girl where there was  a scene with a big, gloomy house like a castle.

In my opinion there are two sentences that important in this story

“I had so worked upon my imagination as really to believe that about the whole mansion and domain  there hung an atmosphere peculiar to themselves and their immediate vicinity — an atmosphere which had no affinity with the air of heaven, but which had reeked up from the decayed trees, and the gray  wall, and the silent tarn — a pestilent and mystic vapour, dull, sluggish, faintly discernible, and leaden-hued. “

By this sentence we can find the atmosphere that felt by the mind of the character of the story. He thought that the place was dull, gloom, spooky and mystic. This is an important description that introduce to the reader about the condition of the house it self that has significant relation to the characteristic of Usher.

In this unnerved — in this pitiable condition –I feel that the period will sooner or later arrive when I must abandon life and reason together, in some struggle with the grim phantasm, FEAR.”

This second important sentecence told about the mental condition of the main character, Usher. It shows the bad mental condition of him. He thought of  the dark moment, gloom and also fear. Look through this two sentence, we can withdraw the conclusion that between the setting of place and the character have big  similarities. The similarities itself is shown by the description of the place and the condition of the characters that create the dark and gothic atmosphere.
